I have a cm400a. I bought it not long ago and immediately changed the oil and filter. It was leaking so I assumed bad eBay gasket or maybe I pinched it. Bought another, again with new oil. Seemed ok but I really am not riding it yet. I noticed some oil and started it up. Oil poured from the bottom so I shut it off. Laying down and cranking starter without fuel, and I see it blasting out from the pan mating surface?? I did notice I was missing the spring after watching a video or two. It was never there so I didn’t know. I can’t imagine the spring is to blame?? Does anyone have any idea what is happening?

Moved to SOHC Engine section.

The spring is intended to keep the filter pushed to the engine mating surface so the oil flows through the filter and not around it. Without the spring, the filter won't be working as intended. Can't speak to your leak without seeing what you see. Others more familiar with your model will be along to help.

There's 1 sealing o-ring on the filter case bolt and 1 sealing gasket for the filter case... ..Did you leave an old gasket (or remnants of one) in the filter case or stuck to the bottom of engine, and install it back with a new 1 making a "double-stack" ?
I've seen all the brands of filters for sale on eee Bay, including genuine Honda... ..Many offered without the bolt O-ring nor a case gasket... ..Which Chinese one did you buy so we know to steer clear of them ?

Just to add on to what Boosted said, I have had bad luck with the case gasket in the aftermarket kits. the diameter of the o-ring seems smaller than it should be and ends up leaking around the edge of the filter housing. the reduced o-ring diameter leaves less room for the o-ring to squeeze and seal the gap. see my crude diagram below. Solution is to try the OEM Honda gaskets if this is your same issue.

I've seen that before, it was even a problem in the 80's when Honda started supplying one filter with two different moulded O-rings.
They went to circular O-rings which could be a pain to keep in shaped groove, we used Hondabond to 'glue' them in
I never found out what the 'thinner' one was for? (maybe some industrial engine or CX 500?)
Eventually we only had filters with single shaped O-ring, part number specific .
Maybe it was only in Britain?
