A long CB/CL/SL 350 build

I'll have to check with @Sonreir, but I'm sure he will offer some type of discount for VHT members.
That's cool. I just ordered one, The other one I ordered' that was wrong, I got from Amazon. But it actually came from Sparck Moto.

I was gonna ask to return but, I'm gonna see if it will work on the CL100 I'm building.

Well, some great updates IMO. Got the motor in. wheels on for the most part. Wired up the charging and stater circuits. Put power to it and pushed the repaired starter button, I did myself, and she turned over.

Soon the carbs go on, some how I have to figure out how to install the exhaust headers, Using the SL header set with the CB350 hardware, won't tighten down the pipes.

Until I figure that out, I'll install the CB350 header pipes and stick them out so, I can tighten them.

I'm hoping to get this done this weekend. Hook up the auxilary <-sp,? fuel supply and fire..

First gotta prime the oil system...........I pulled the little bolt at the top, and plugs, will try spinning the engine till I see oil in there.

So, still so close, yet so far. Crap, still can't download pics from phone.605647789_10241189761863226_8862979239933986574_n.jpg

I can't seem to get oil to the upper top end.

I Have the carbs, exhaust and plugs off, so it spins easily.

But, I'm afraid to turn it over too much.

I've poured some oil into the valve adjusting holes. I took the little bolt out of the cam chest to see, but nothing.

Any help would be appreciated.

Happy New Year Everyone

Happy New Year to you as well.

I'm sure you lubed all the parts as you put it together. How are you turning the engine over, with the electric start? It could take a while, a couple of minutes or more. You'll never get there if you're using the kickstarter though 🙄

I just start mine and loosen the bolt to ensure that there is oil flow. I've never had any issues with a clean engine that I've worked on. Mine are all kick start so that's my only real choice. If it were an old barn find engine I may question that procedure.

Yes, assembly lube........I'm using the electric starter. I've sprayed a little WD40 down the cylinders just in case.

So, should I leave the little bolt in, and keep watch on the rockers?

No, when you have a check point like the 350 engine does, definitely use it because at electric start cranking speed you won't see oil flying off the rocker arms, only when the engine is running will that happen. One of the reasons it takes so long is because the pump piston only pushes oil on the downstroke, and it only gets 1 downstroke per every 3 engine revolutions, so it will take a few minutes at electric start speed. Just do it in bursts with a half minute of rest for the starter in between.

Well, I put the rocker arm port covers back on, and left the little bolt out...........cranked it and after a few oil flowed out of the bolt hole.

Wow, who would have thought. Tomorrow the carbs go on.

Have to figure out what to do with the exhaust. The four half moon spacers are too short for the SL header pipes. Won't tighten up to the head.

Partzilla shows two different part numbers for the exhaust collars so not sure if you are using the sl or cb collars. Also did you put new gaskets in where the headers fit into the engine? They are copper and crush down as you tighten the header bolts up.

I never noticed the exhaust flanges were different. If they are, I've probably got a few extras.
Can you do some measuring of the different ones. I have SL header pipes, and using CB header pipe flanges and they are too short I think.

Thank bro.

Yes, I have new copper gaskets, I think the half moon shape flanges are too short. The parts list I think you are talking about doesn't state the size/length.

I was curious so I dug right in. It turns out that I have several of both sets. I'll bet you have the short ones.

Exactly what I have. Measured mine and I do have the short ones and need the long ones.

If you have extras and can part with a couple, what would be the asking price?

Thanks in advance.

Got the exhaust collars from frankjames 1900, work perfect. Course exhaust is being sanded and prepped for painting I got from

Thanks

I got the new rear tire 120/80-18 mounted and installed on the bike. Took two tries, first one pinched the tube.

I have an issue with the right side switch control. The brake light works with brake handle but. the starter button won't work.

All wires are connected. I can jump the solenoid and it spins the motor, but not the button.

Any ideas?????? Also the harness is too short to reach the headlight bucket, so am trying to figure ot how the stuff all those wires under the tank.

What a mess20260108_131315.jpg

Pretty sure the 350s had this too, but the 450 listing shows it. Ground wire runs from the bottom of one of the handlebar mounts to the gauge bracket, effectively taking ground from the top bridge to the rubber-damped handlebar mounts so the bars are grounded. #1 below

ah haa.....thanks brother, believe I can make a wire with the kit I have...

What gauge wire might that be?

Well, I found a wire in my parts bin, that was made up just for such a project. Don't know where I got it from, but has the eyelets on either end and wrapped in conduit. Cool.

Third time has to be the charm. Second inner tube put in must have gotten pinched, but took two days to leak down. I pumped about 50lbs of air in and you can hear air escaping. ****............!!

So took the wheel off, which was a good thing cause the brake actuator was frozen, so had to take care of that. (fixed).

Awaiting the new inner tubes I ordered. Got the little wire installed and it works. The started button works, still think I need a new relay though. I took this one apart and cleaned the contacts, still doesn't seem to work very well. I have a brand new one, but the wire connectors are reversed. So gotta do some wire cuttings. Maybe!

I'm working on other bits of the wiring. Got brake light for front & rear switches. horn, spark to the points, turn signals come on but don't blink, no tail ight.

Haven't hooked the headlight, so can't check that, nor hi/lo beam. Speedo wires not connected, so those little lights haven't been checked either.

Suppose to get 3 inches of snow here in central Georgia today. So sitting in the florida room, watching for it. It's too cold to be out.

Just a teaser photo.

I forgot to put the tach gear in, will that become an issue later? I've tried to push it in, doesn't seem to be seating correctly.

I might just plug it if I would have to remove the end cap. I don't need a tach.

Were you rotating it a little as you slid it in? It's a worm drive on the camshaft so it won't just push straight in. And then the seal, after the shaft is fully seated.

About the same here and I would really love to work on my bike. While I haven't read the book the title "The Winter of Our Discontent" comes to mind as I watch the snow fall. Yes I know our northern tier members have a much harder and longer winter season to endure but darn it!

I'm originally from Delaware. use to get snow every year up there while growing up.
Been gone from there since 1976, don't miss it.

No, just pushing it in. Will have to try rotating some soon, when it get a bit warmer out in the garage.

Thank for the input.

Got the new inner tubes in the mail. Stay tuned for round three of tire install.

Boy, snow is coming down now......the cat wants to go out...........I'll see how she reacts.

The dog is snuggled in his bed, and doesn't show no sign of moving.

Pretty good job on the fork cleanup, looks great.

I want to put a disk brake on the front of my SL350, so I ordered a wheel from a CB350F, but it's too wide and won't fit into the forks.

Am I missing something here?
It sounds like you are hoping to fit the CB350F wheel into forks from a CB500F, but the wheel doesn't fit into the forks because it is too wide?

Maybe the issue is caused by the fork spacing inherent to the SL350 triple tree. Have you considered swapping in a triple tree from a bike that was equipped with the disc?

I swapped in a complete front end from a CL360 on my 1971 CB350 build, albeit with a drum brake up front.

Yes Sir, I have. I have a triple from a CB350F, but the fork tubes are of a smaller diameter.

So, I'm in the market for a triple that will be a direct bolt on, as far as the head spindle length.

Just haven't really taken nor have the time, really taken, the time to research.

Snowing and too freaking cold to go out in the garage and do anything.

Thanks for your response.

And you'll need manifold boots to fit them too.
I figure with the springs being messed up, and not wanting to deal with these carbs at the moment........what does it matter.

Thanks for your response. Appreciate all the help you are giving me, keep it coming. Lord knows I need it.

Okay, that makes sense. It's tricky business fitting parts from multiple models together. I hope you can find compatible pieces.

Thanks. My main concern is getting it running and ridable, then all the other fun stuff will happen.

Fourth time for the inner tube and dayyyyyyum.....pinched it too.

Can't figure what I'm doing wrong other than maybe the tube is too big. 400/450-18 tubes.

I'm mounting a 410-18 tire. I think I'll order a 350-18 tube, and see what happens.

That's probably what it is, a 3.50-18 tube will work in a 4.00-18 tire so in a 4.10 tire it would be fine.
