I painted the swing arm, brake bar, top engine mounts and small brackets with 4 coats of Rustoleum gloss black rattle can paint.

Do I need to clear coats these parts?

I am terrible when it comes to paint and painting.

That type of paint may not be the most durable on its own for the swingarm or brake bar. SprayMax is a brand of spray paint that includes a hardening agent that is activated prior to use. This gives chemical resistance and a bit tougher coating. They sell both black and clear in different finishes. It is highly recommended to wear a mask when working with it.

You could use SprayMax 2K clear to protect the work you've already done and that might be a good idea. In the future you might look at the SprayMax black options which do not need clear coat afterwards.

Many people go with powder coating for the frame components and typically that is more of a satin finish (no clear).

I'm terrible as well. Do you need to clear coat these parts? Maybe yes, maybe no. Would you be using a fuel resistant clear like 2K? Those parts may never see a drop of fuel.

I'm also interested in the answers you receive from those wise in the ways.

I used Rustoleum 2X, paint primer, gloss. I did have the frame and swingarm, I forgot that the swing arm, powder coated.

I will research SprayMax 2K.

THX 👍

I guess high gloss to match the paint?

Yeah, with that paint use an epoxy clear coat. I used Samurai on mine for both the epoxy primer and clear with Rust-Oleum enamel in between.

Spray Max 2K is a 2 part urethane paint. I'm not an expert but I don't think the 2K will play nice with your enamel.
Worked fine on mine. I didn't use Spraymax - but a similiar 2 part epoxy paint (poly).

My paint is

I'm no chemist, either. I searched for some advice about enamel paint with SprayMax clear. The advice was to either do the clear immediately or wait one to two weeks for the enamel to completely off gas. It has to do with the solvents in the 2k clear. I'd probably wait the two weeks.

I don't think 2k and epoxy are the same thing, but, again, I do not claim to be an expert.

That is the norm for any clearcoat. (or paint for that matter). either recoat in x hours or wait x days

I used the "SprayMax 2K Glamour High Gloss Clear Coat" on my tank and side covers and am really pleased with it. I did wait about a week or so after I sprayed Dupli-Color Perfect Match Premium Automotive Paint, Milano Red until I couldn't smell it off gassing any longer. Be sure to use the Spraymax 2K outside, upwind and I would recommend a respirator because its suppose to be some nasty stuff. Another thing is the instructions say the pot life is 48 hours after you mix it but I had issues where I tried to do some touch up the next day, about 24 hours, on the side covers and it was spitting small semi solid globs.

If I had done a better job on the color coat the tank and side covers would look great but that is on me not the paint or clear coat.
