Hey all ...

Quick question ... does the reg/rec typically generate a lot of heat? i have a brand new one that I am planning to install shortly and am wondering if I should install it in the electronics tray (w/ the battery etc ...) or does it generate heat, in which case I might want to install it under the tray?

Just curious ... Thanks Bill

I've never actually felt it while it's under load but given the fact that there are cooling fins on the R/R I would say heat is definitely a possibilty.

^^^Agree, I wouldn't put it inside a tray. Mine is bolted vertically under the back of the seat on the sheet metal cross-brace the factory welded in between the frame in front of the rear shocks, barely visible but surrounded by nothing above the forward part of the rear fender.

What type of R/R do you have? The type that works like most and shorts the stator, like the original, will generate some heat, simply because of the current passing through the diodes. The other type, which uses linear circuitry that reduces the current in proportion to the charge on the battery will generate even more heat, and cooling is even more important.

A permanent magnet type alternator puts out watts, usually more watts than needed to keep the battery up, unused capacity is shunted to ground in the form of heat.

Thanks all ... sounds like consensus is ... it generates heat and shouldn't be mounted in the electronics box ... I'll find another spot ... I appreciate the input! (y)

in the mid 80's, Suzuki tried fitting a R/R without any fins and under a cover on the GSX550.
It was a disaster and led to some complete charging system failures. It seems they are slow learners as in 2010, the GSX-R 1000R could actually overheat the wiring then catch fire.
They can get real hot, make sure R/R gets airflow and don't use a LiFePo battery

Bought an EarthX battery on the suggestion of Matt @ Sprack (wiring harness brand new too) ... will likely mount it to the underside of the electronics tray and use a couple of heat resistant spacers / washers between the box and the RR.
