I’m willing to try this, but I noticed that I wasn’t reaching full advance while checking the timing and getting a little backfire while revving. Does that mean my springs are too tight already? I’m not sure the rpm I hit, I should check that.
It sounds like the advancer isn't moving full distance, did you check the smoothness and travel when you had it off? It might need a couple drops of light oil lubrication to work fully and smoothly.I’m willing to try this, but I noticed that I wasn’t reaching full advance while checking the timing and getting a little backfire while revving. Adding to AD's advice about the travel, there are stops/tabs that can be used to limit the motion of the weights. It may be difficult to tell if yours have been monkeyed with or not, but it's something to consider.I’m willing to try this, but I noticed that I wasn’t reaching full advance while checking the timing and getting a little backfire while revving. That sounds a little more like fuel/air mix, maybe a possible exhaust leak? It’s like brand new, clean as a whistle, moves freely, just loose on the bench. I may not have revved high enough. I was chasing a slight idle increase at temp and a bit of popping and a bit of bogging off the line. Screams at rpm though. I just did new carb boots to eliminate air leaks, but still increase 100 rpm while riding.
Good to hear, and thanks for the update.A quick update to say thanks for the great advice. I tweaked the springs on my advancer a bit by tightening up the hooks on each end of the springs until the weights were snappy and the 450 is running tighter than she has in quite a while. It did change the timing at idle considerably, but I had just enough rotation to solve that.
Result is no more popping on decel and an idle that behaves like a dream. Thanks again! Oh, and I live in a hilly neighborhood and the 450 ran me up the hills perfectly. If anything is off, my 190 lbs and a good hill will make any problem known, quickly.
