I'm looking for a change switch for my 1979 CM400A. The same switch was used on the CB and CM across the 400 and 450. From what I can tell this is a notoriously hard part to find but should be on any of those engines, if you're doing a tear down please consider pulling it off, it is the bolt with wires coming out of it directly under the carbs. It runs to 3 pin connector. There is also a washer separating it from the top of the case.

You might try soaking the switch in a cup of gas for a few days. Typically these switches get filled with oil which tend to solidify when the bike isn't run for long periods.

Sadly on the side you're not seeing is a crack. I think it was slightly bent and then over torqued by the previous owner. Sadly it's not going back together and I'll haver to track down a new one.

post the part # and i'll keep an eye out.

I did an extensive search this afternoon and even David Silver doesn't have one. All locations I checked including eBay were either sold out or listed as unavailable. You know there's a 400A somewhere in a scrapyard that has a good switch on it, just finding it is the challenge. Here's the part number - 35752-417-013

Partzilla shows that part number to be for the '78 Hondamatic.
The part number for the '79 Hondamatic is shown by them to be : 35752-448-000 but is also "unavailable".

Someone on eBay today listed a whole bunch of parts from an '83 CM400A, and I looked thru their listed inventory. This seller has 1000's of parts listed including parts from what must be from 5, 6, or 7 Hondamatics dismantled. I didn't finish searching his/her inventory but I stopped when I came upon an entire engine from an '81 CM400A with the change switch showing installed in it and thought to report back here with the suggestion to write him using eBay's messaging from the engine listing with a question like "Do you have a good used CM400A Hondamatic change switch to sell, part number 35752-448-000 ?" and see what happens.

In his/her listings I discovered 2 sets of the 400A carb insulators that are also NLA and his prices for those contradict each other by being different by $100 !

HOPEFULLY, he's still got at least 1 change switch for you and he doesn't price it too high, assuming too that he knows they're one of the many NLA "unobtainium" parts.

Check your Private Messages in a moment for the seller info, I'm going to send it now...

Hey folks, thank you all for the help.

I found a CM400A 1981 being parted out and spotted the change switch still installed. All the wires were ripped off but the contacts are still there and the bottom tip still moves. Luckily I've got the wiring from mine, so with some soldering hopefully I'll have a replacement change switch come this spring.

You can test the switch by setting your OHM meter on continuity and placing one probe on a contact and the other on the body of the switch. Push the plunger into the switch . If you get a reading the switch is good. Might save you the work of soldering the wires on if the switch doesnt work. All the switches are the same. The different part numbers are for the wiring connections on the different bikes. I put a 81 CM 400 A change switch on a 78 CB 400 A just changed the connectors. Make sure you have the correct washer under the switch . It sets the clearance between the change switch and the shift cam. This sets the distance the plunger can move in and out of the switch and if off can cause problems. The change switch controls the change switch relay.
