Hi all, I've been working on my new to me 1981 CM200 and I'm stuck trying to figure out this shifting issue. I can shift into first and back to neutral, but I get stuck right at the edge of second. I can sometimes get it to shift into 2nd and 3rd, but then I get stuck either in 3rd down to 2nd or 2nd in general. I'll try to embed a video to help you all see what I'm talking about. I've seen similar threads on this bike but can't seem to find one with the solution. Thanks for any assistance!

Thanks for the reply, I've tried to shift while the gears are turning by raising the back tire and spinning while trying to shift. I get the same result. Pretty stumped!
A video of what you're trying to do might be helpful, sometimes word descriptions aren't enough.

I'll try embedding a link to a video I took.

I tried embedding a video with my original post, are you able to view it?

Yes, and I'm seeing what others have mentioned. Here's why what you're doing isn't working: the clutch is off the mainshaft, and the "friction" between constant-mesh transmission gears allows the mainshaft to rotate when you're rotating the rear wheel - so it's effectively rotating both shafts the same speed, which won't allow the engagement dogs to move and align. Take a look at this video to fully understand why both shafts need to be turning, or one held completely still while turning the other, for it to work properly.

Hey ancientdad, thanks for the reply and video. Definitely helps to understand. I put everything back together and took the bike out to test. I still can't shift up into 2nd even when actually riding the bike. Any other suggestions?
