Hey All,

Quick question around the clutch lifter mechanism ... the manual says to pack it with grease when reassembling ... I did this with white lithium grease, but the mechanism doesn't seem to work as "fluidly" as I think it should ... it was spotlessly clean when I reassembled it so I know its not grime ... any thoughts?

It may actually be OK, I am not sure what it should feel like or how "snappy" it should be ... pic attached ...

Did you inspect the spiral grooves for wear? It could be slightly binding at some point during the travel if there is a point of excess wear on the "threads". That said, I usually use a heavier grease like wheel bearing grease in that mechanism. Or, you just cleaned it far too much... :)
 
Did you attempt to inject the grease via the grease nipple at the front of the cover (see if that changes anything)?
I would think it really needs to be in there good once assembled & loaded, the mechanism should ride on no air voids but pure grease.

Hey Tom ... that's a good thought, the "thread clutch" is new, so I don't think there were any burrs or wear on it ... as for the cylinder, I cleaned it out pretty good so I think it is in good shape too. I am wondering if I used the right grease? (white lithium) or if I should have just used regulate automotive grease?

I also don't know how "fluid" that whole mechanism should be? I suppose I could just wire it up and see if it loosens up with use ... not really a hard part to take off & put back on if I have issues I guess ... Thanks for the thoughts as always! Bill
 
You know, a funny thing happens when you start paying attention ... I was staring at this clutch cover plate a few days ago, and noticed that the grove on the barrel didn't line up with the notch in the cover plate ... I gave it a twist to line them up and lo & behold, I now have a much more "fluid" response with that spring on the inside stretched a bit! (I haven't looked it up yet, but I'll be that's in the shop manual!) D'oh! :lol:
