1976 CJ360T

I'm at the last stretch of finishing up my 76 CJ360T. Lots of work done and lots of learning. Bike runs nice. Replacing rear brakes and chain+sprockets to finish the job.

The existing chain was 530 98T, and sprockets were 16T and 33T. I couldn't find 33T rear sprockets, so ordered 34T (along with same size chain and front sprocket).

Well, the chain is simply too tight with the 34T rear sprocket. I can't even get the rear tire axle bolt through the swingarm bolt holes, that's how tight it is.

What is the best course of action? 15T front sprocket or increase the chain link length to 100?

Appreciate input!

Kim.

I always run 17/34 sprockets on 360's, 6th gear becomes 'overdrive' until you do a 390 conversion (geared for 127mph @10,000 rpm)
I would get longer chain, small sprockets wear quite a lot faster than larger ones.
When Reynolds chain was world leader (they sold some inventions to DID in 1970's) they stated front sprocket, for best wear / life, shouldn't be smaller than 19 teeth, chain doesn't need to 'flex' too much so lasts longer and doesn't wear sprockets
On almost all Japanese (and most others) 18t front sprocket is largest that can be fitted.
Even with high grade materials and better control of heat treatment it does mean chains wear faster than with 'optimal' sizes
When I was doing Enduro's, 12/13 - 43/54 sprockets needed changing every event, never lasted longer than 250 miles unless there were no water crossings or mud (very rare in British enduro's)

Thanks for the quick responses! I have both a 109T chain and half-link on order (didn't know that last one was a thing!).

Will provide update once they arrive.

Kim.
