I have a '72 CB350 and looking to order a new regulator rectifier. Specifically the one from 4 into 1 pictured below. I have noticed that on some others they have an additional black wire instead of a ground wire like in the picture.

My question is if there is a difference between these variations. Is one more preferred than the other and where does the ground wire connect to?

The black wire is the voltage sensing wire, connect it to one of the black wires in the main wire harness. It works best to connect that green wire directly to the negative battery terminal.

Got it - thank you Mike! Do you know where the ground connects to the regulator/rectifier itself? It may be obvious once I have the actual part but looking at the picture seems unclear to me.

The green wire in the rec/reg harness connects to the ground in the main harness and the body of the unit will get grounded when bolted to clean metal at the frame or battery box.
