Best electronic ignition?

Actually i think I linked to the wrong item
this is for the CB250,350 and CL models

If it's a wasted spark design on a 180° twin, how does that not cause trouble with the intake charge on the off cylinder?

Heat and vibration on the wire connections is a good point.

send them a message and ask how that is mitigated in their unit.
i am ex military avionics and there are several ways to mount electronic wires to prevent this.
believe me that jet aircraft vibration is of higher amplitude and frequency than a Motorcycle engine.
the type of solder they use and any cable relief will be a good guide if they have thought about this.

It's a moot point for me, I can't afford to put that much money into an EI when my points are working just fine, but an electronic advance EI is the only way I would go if I ever do.

They write about this in the installation manual AD. Down load from my link.
cheers

i just read it again for about the 5 th time and found a little safety feature that turns off power to the coils if it detects the engine has stopped rotating. This would have saved be a few bucks!

It's a pity that Pamco Pete got out of the business. It was a reasonably priced option.
I have a Pamco ignition on on my CJ and (so far) it's worked great. I have one on my XS650 as well.
I would like to go electronic on my CL350 as well but I don't want to spend an arm and leg. To that end it looks like Charlies Place, Tytronic, or Boyer are the cheapest options.

My guess is it's a cut and paste error(copied from other systems that are wasted spark) in there documentation, and it's not really a wasted spark arrangement. It does appear to be a TCI 12v controller compatible with the existing 12v points coils(NOT DC-CDI). It's always interesting to read over whatever docs they give to get some idea of what they provide.

I run the sache unit on my CB450. For what it’s worth, it’s been reliable for me thus far. Have about 500 miles on it since install. The mechanic who installed it, prefers this EI for most of his builds. I actually thought he was going to install Charlie’s place, but he said he has had issues with those recently and didn’t have good luck with the customer service.

Because I haven't seen a good EI vs points debate in a while...

Completely unrelated to anything that I'm currently working on but I stumbled across a reference to this EI this morning somewhere else. Down the rabbit hole I went. Thinking about some of the challenges I've been having with poor performance with my Bomber last year that I assumed were carb related but now I'm not so sure. Been reading every thread I can find here on the troubles with the OE mechanical advance units and wondering if I have the patience and aptitude to work these issues out. Seems like eliminating the mechanical might eliminate a whole lot of possible problems. Wonder if anybody else has used this unit and what their thoughts are? I recognize that it is absurdly expensive but if it holds up well and functions well there may be value in that.

If you're still monitoring this thread I would love an update on how this EI is working for you after another riding season?

That elektrinik-sachse is supposed to the the gold standard based on the reports I have read from a few with deep pockets, or the desire to get the best one out there. A very knowledgeable Canadian member of the SOHC forum who does first class restorations of the SOHC CB750 series including sandcast models highly recommends the unit, with a number being used on his builds.

I fall into that category I think. As I said, I don't know if I have the patience or the interest to struggle along trying to get OE ignition, (which is known to have lots of challenges with the advance mechanism, and may be beyond my comprehension) working correctly. The number of threads here on VHT that chronicle the challenges with the advance mechanism and sourcing springs, etc make me wonder if I want to bother with it. Last summer was the first time for this bike to be on the road. Due to some life events which took time away from motorcycles I was never able to spend time get it running well and truthfully I lost patience with it. I assumed all of the issues were related to carburetors but now I'm not convinced. I'm sure some definitely were but if I can eliminate ignition as a source of problems I think that's a step forward.

Ya, it's pricey but that's why I ask here if there may be value in that.

I am also interested in an update.

This EI has been bullet proof for me so far. Just fires right up and idles correctly and runs reliably. It maybe expensive, but time is valuable.
Exactly what I was hoping to hear and I couldn't agree more. Time is the one thing that we all have limited amounts of.
I guess I'm getting close to splurging on one then. Thanks for the feedback.
Ditto...I will order one up in time for the start of riding season.

I will be installing my Boyer EI maybe this week. I ran a Pamco for about 6 years before it failed. I’m currently installing a new wiring harness and the Boyer I’ve had in my garage for a couple years.
Thanks for the information, but please recheck your PMs (private messages).
