So from back on Honda Twins forum I was told cool kids moved over here...You guys really help with the rebuilt of my 85 cb450sc.
Well I have now bought new coil (GT500) and cdi unit from Rex’s Speed Shop and still no sparks.
I was gonna ask if it looks ok but I dont know how to post pictures.
So I have installed the new cdi and the new coil. I have not connected the eyelet but I will have to change the connection between coil and cdi.
Does the mount for the coil need to be touching the frame or can I just zip tie it for the moment?
And does the green eyelet on the cdi mount go there?
All connections should be ok...
Please let me know if I did something very wrong

LDR will be along later to help, as you know he's the resident expert on them. Glad you came over, the answers would have come a lot harder over at the old palace now...

The coil has to be mounted in this case.
Not familiar with this coil. In the Quick Reply screen you'll see the tool bar buttons at the top, 3rd one from the left is for adding pictures.
.
Wow, I'm one of the "cool kids" now. Never had that distinction before, I been called a lot of things but never that

Cool kids?

Is that like the "In crowd"

Never part of that either.

Me neither. Even bikes didn't help this 5'10", 125 lb kid in high school, I was mostly a loner with bike riders all around me... well, until they figured out I knew how to work on them.

Ah crap I m using my phone...
I did connect the two bolts (one from the coil and the other being screwed in original hole) using ss wire but then that s not gonna work...
I reckon the whole issue has to do with earth being broken somewhere!
As always thanks for your help cool kids!

Not sure that coil will work on a CDI ignition.....Can you get an Ohm reading on the coil primary?

My GUESS is that ring terminal must be grounded......BUT, follow the instructions from the CDI unit......

The ignition is completely separate from the battery......
Power only goes to the coil momentarily as the engine spins the magneto.....

That coil looks good and correct.......

Ha ok! So I guess no power going to the cdi either... new coil, new cdi, new ish E3 36 plugs, fully charged battery, good fuses, earth seems ok... whats the crack then?!

The good parts are the Primary pickup and the Battery charging circuits. The power supply and advancer circuits are both below spec so I'll say the stator is hurt and needs repair. Again Rex's to the rescue since they are doing all of those repairs now, not cheaply though. Other option is to go with used and hope you get a good one.

Having a 100% good ignition system is a benefit. I know you're spending a good amount of money getting this part under control but it will be good for years to come. Most of these models running around have questionable ignition. Almost all of them either don't get full timing advance or it's very late in the rpm range.
I do have to ask why you replaced the coil and CDI before running the stator tests.

That would be because I am very impatient and a bit of a moron [emoji40]
