CB400T Carb repair, etc

I've tried that. Once in a while I remember to look at it, then I can't read the scribbles.
That's why I keep an unsent text to myself on my phone, it's easy to use as a notepad and with talk to text it's easy to dictate to it.

But it requires your phone to be nearby at all times when you get to the CRS level. So you have to remember that too.

Welcome to the New Year guys!
I have a question, an ol guy question.
On my previous bike I had a thumb screw that I could use to set the throttle to cruise for a while, to give my right hand a break, as it seems to go numb after about 15 to 30 minutes of riding.
Has anyone come up with a way to do this on an older Honda?
Just thought I'd ask.
Have a great weekend all!
Bob

Here's the most basic version, still need your hand to hold but no fingers
I have the earliest version of the Atlas Throttle lock and I'm not impressed.

I've wondered if there's another (newer Honda?) motorcycle with the same diameter handlebar that came new with a cruise-controlling "throttle grip locker" that could be swapped onto my Custom's buckhorn bars.
Did or do any of the "cruiser" bikes like a GoldWing, SilverWing, Valkyrie, Shadow, etc.. have anything ?

Thanks, I'll check in to this.

Thanks again guys!
If it gives me a minute or two off the throttle, that's all I'm looking for.
Enjoy your winter, well, I don't have a choice..............

I had some old bicycle gloves that had padded palm heels and thought of some stick on Dr. Scholl's foot/heel padding on the paddle, to make it even better.

I've tried the padded gloves, and the only thing that helps is to take my hand off of the grip. I've damaged this wrist years ago, probably why I have this problem
my dad always said that I would pay for these things, well............
anyway, this new thing should allow me to rest my hand and ride using the palm of my hand, so I'll give it a try.

I tried to find a throttle assit online in Canada and every place I tried either did not have it, or was sold out.
I waited for our local Honda dealer to open tuesday and he had one on the shelf, and Oxford unit.
Looks similar and I now have one.
I'll try this next summer, it's a tad cool out there right now.
Thanks again guys!

I checked the site that you posted, but after seeing what the shipping would have cost me to ship to the 51st State :), I could have purchased three os four of them.
so.................

Yes the postal fees for US to Canada are just stupid. Looks like big fun with the grandson! If you live in the snowy winterland, might as well try and have fun with it! It's gonna warm up soon.

Yes, I ordered something many years ago from Florida; the postal, duty and brokerage fees to get here were more than the cost of the item.
We are being told that a few warmer days may come our way this coming week.
Might be able to leave the snow blower in the garage for a bit!

OK, I'm back.
It is oil change time.
I am looking for 10-40 oil.
I used Castrol last season, but is there an oil that is recommended for my 1981 CB400T?

Many of us here use Rotella T4 15w40 diesel oil, it has a bit higher zinc level than conventional oils and none of the modern friction modifiers that don't work well in our engines because of the wet clutch. And it's a little cheaper than most oils too. You can get it at Walmart and Tractor Supply, I just bought a 2.5 gallon jug of it recently for about $36 at TS.

I just had something odd happen.
I went to change the oil and filter, and........
When I drained the oil only about 10 oz came out?
I cleaned everything, replaced the O-rings and put the new filter on.
Then I added oil and it only took about 10oz to fill it?
Should I be looking for anything?
No noises, or valve train sounds and the oil light goes out.
Seems odd.
I will start it again in a few days and have another look.

10 oz. from the filter?

I've noticed that there are times in life that you do things that make you feel really stupid afterwards.
oh well...........
I am very pleased that it started right up after sitting all winter.

Bob sharing that has made many of us feel better about our own personal "Duhhh" moments and I am sure many of us could top it without trying very hard at all.

Bob, what a great picture to have, just wonderful. I took the liberty of "working" on the picture a bit for you. It's a little less blue. Happy to delete it if you want.

Thanks!
I bought one of those cheap things that allows you to take a negative and back light it, then take a picture of it, then edit it.
unfortunately the edit software that they offered wasn't free like they said it would be, so I had to use something that I had that was over 30 years old.
I may try another inexpensive unit to see if I can get a better result.
this picture stuff is not my forte.
bob

as a side note.............
that little girl in the picture just turned 50..............
bob
Yes, the years have flown by I'm sure. And it just dawned on me that the negative is backwards, the sidestand should be on the left side of the bike... :)

I have a question.
I purchased a different throttle lock and I am concerned about how it mounts.
It grips the, "likely", nylon sleeve that goes over the handlebar to allow the throttle to rotate.
I've never hand the throttle grip off of the bike so I am not aware of what it is made of.
My concern is that the bike is a 1983 and if it is a plastic sleeve it may be a bit brittle.
Have any of you used a throttle lock like this, and did it cause any problems?

Went for my first ride of the year yesterday, very nice!
I tried the throttle lock and have to admit I am not a complete fan.
It did work, but seems to restrict the throttle's free rotation a bit.
I will take it off and put the crampbuster on next.
Hey, it's another excuse to go for a ride!
bob

I managed to get a ride in, in between the rain drops.......
I used the crampbuster for the first time and Im sold!
My hand never went numb.
Perfect!
Also, I seem to be flooding it at startup this spring for some reason.
I have been giving it a twist of the throttle and pulling the choke, and for some reason it isn't starting up.
The next time I start it I'll just pull the choke.
If that doesn't work I'll just twist the throttle without the choke.

Being as my coils, plug wires and ends are original, is it possible that I should check them to make sure I am getting good spark?
Is it possible that this may be why my bike is hard to start after it sits?
or is it just me in a learning curve struggling with cold start up?
