If y'all are following my 1962 CA 95 rescue thread, you know its' time to get a title and plates. 2008 was last time I titled an out of state CA95 in Kentucky. 2008 was a Sheriff inspection and DMV (Bowling Green, KY) visit. At that time no titles were issued for older "Bill of Sale" bikes. All that was issued was registration and plates. The frame number was extended with enough "X's" to satisfy the 14 number VIN number.

Today 3/7/25, it's a different story. I had the bike inspected and all went well. I took my Bill of Sale, completed inspection paperwork TC-96-182 Application for Kentucky Certificate of Title or Registration along with insurance to Lexington DMV. No go. Today, I had to complete form TC96-169 Application for vehicle hull or identification number.

Both state forms and the original Bill of Sale had to be sent to Frankfort (our states capitol) to gain a modern VIN number. I will update this thread once I get the VIN or what else may be needed.

By the way. Lexington DMV recognized my Bill of Sale. All I did was manipulate an Excel spreadsheet with legal jargon sourced from Bill of Sale forms sold on line.

Sounds a lot like the CA process. I wonder if they do the same where it has to be tagged by a state official as well.

I can't wait to see what Albany NY throws up when I try to build a registration for my other CB77 which has zero paperwork. For my current project bike it's not an issue - I have the transfer signed over from the PO. For a ghost bike, not sure yet.

I'll bet the same goes for Kentucky. I'm unsure what the turnaround time for paperwork or what additional steps needed, so I will report back when I know more.

3/21/2025. I received my VIN number today. Next step is to visit DMV (Clerk of Courts in KY). I need to call ahead to make sure the VIN plate has been delivered to Clerk of Courts.
VIN plate needs to be attached to the neck of the bike with screws or rivets. Once the VIN plate is attached, the bike gets inspected again. When the inspector signs off that the VIN number is attached correctly, to the correct vehicle, I can register the bike get plates and title. So far, $35 for 1st inspection, $5.00 for the VIN# plate. I have a couple of plate theme backgrounds available and the option of a vanity plate, all at additional cost.

Attach a VIN plate with screws or rivets?! But that will ruin the originality of the bike and decrease its value!
j/k
Obviously actually having a title can only help the value.:)
My dad's '40 Ford PU had a plate like that attached to the cab. It had been issued by the state of Minnesota.
The Texas DMV thought it was weird but they registered it.
