Hello All,

I am using a '74 CL360 front drum hub on my current build ... have it all ready to go, but have a couple of questions ... first, I can't find an reference to the gear drive for the speedo on CMSNL ... I've checked both the front wheel assembly page and the tach / speedo page, but I can't seem to find a reference to this part ... (I see the round gear, but not this cylindrical one?) ... does anyone know where this would be found?

Second question ... should this assembly be packed with grease when installed, or does it go in "oiled"? (I am assuming it doesn't go in dry). There are also two metal washers that accompany this drive (red arrows on diagram below)... do they both sit under the round gear drive?

And last but not least ... there are two felt dust seals (part #20 on the diagram / green arrows), do these need to be soaked in oil before assembly? I thought I read somewhere that they do ...

Thanks as always for the advice ... Bill

The fiche looks to show the order of assembly but I don't recall there being 2 washers involved in the ring gear for the speedo drive. I'm guessing you didn't take pictures or note of it when you disassembled things... as to the felt washers, I put them in dry as I've never taken any out that seemed to have any grease or oil residue on them. I think they're just there to help keep dirt out of the brake cam. I just looked thoroughly at both the CL360 and '74 CB360 drum brake fiches and neither show the worm gear for the speedo, not visually or in the parts listings. That's a mystery that seems a bit familiar as I think in a past life at another forum we discussed that being missing from parts listings. Is yours missing, or were you just wondering about it? That's one of those things that usually last forever unless it gets frozen in the backing plate and gets boogered up removing it

Hey Tom ... mine are not missing, I have them. I took it all apart to clean it when I got the wheel months ago ... I have everything i need to put it back together ... I am curious to know if I should use some grease when putting those two gears back in ... it was filthy and gummed up when I took it apart ... my gut would tell me that those two gears need lubricant inside the wheel drum (grease or at least some oil) ... thoughts?

Thanks Bill

I use High-heat White Lithium grease.... the Cylindrical gear part of the drive was only sold as a non-removable part of the brake plate, so isn't shown as a separate part....

Thanks Steve ... It did take a bit of work to get it out of the brake plate! ... I ordered the pin that I had to drill out to remove it ... lets hope I can get it back in correctly!

Let's hope that while drilling out the hardened steel spring (roll) pin you did not increase the hole diameter and the new roll pin will fit correctly to space the worm gear.....

For anyone else faced with removal of old dirty or hardened grease in this area, spray carb cleaner is a solution after removing seal, ring gear, thrust washers and scraping out as much old grease as possible.......then re-grease and reinstall parts......

There are spring steel shim and washer behind the worm wheel in direction of thrust and usually a washer on the 'short' end as well
The drive gear should also have a very thin shim and possibly a thicker one to get tooth engagement right
.If hole is oversized, dill it to tapping size for 3 or 4mm screw as the plug will try and push out when wheel turns.
Use high temperature grease on everything, soak the felts in engine oil, blot 'dry' and grease

All ... finally got around to posting a couple pics of the parts in question on this ... am I correct in my assumptions on this diagram?

Also ... what should the orientation of this washer be ... flat side away from the gear or facing towards the gear?

Thanks as always! Bill
