IMG_8415.jpegHello everyone,

I have the possibility to buy a set of rear shocks from an ‘84 Honda CB900f, do you think they will fit my CM400t? The seller measured them on the bike and they’re 13.4 inches eye to eye

Those are not a OEM set of shocks AFAIK based on what I had on my CB1100F. They look like a different style than the factory shock. You need to measure your eye to eye on your stock shock to answer that question. I would suspect your not matching the shock to the bike, as there is close to a 200 lb weight difference between bikes too.

This is the OEM shock from Honda on all 900/1100F models.P1080638.JPG

Stock is 320mm or about 12.6” it’ll move the rear end up and likely stiffen the rear suspension significantly.

Depending on your size/weight/load/riding style it could be an upgrade, could be a detriment.

Good thing about shocks is they’re easily swapped out.

Hmm 🤔
I actually haven’t thought about the difference in weight of the bike. The suspension now is pretty soft as it is but it’s hard to say how it will be with the cb900 shocks, probably anyone’s guess? I am hoping somebody did this swap and is able to share what the result is

That is an aftermarket shock and not the correct Honda supplied unit for the CB900F bike. Where it mounts on the top frame spar it is clearly a bodge of the interior rubber bushing. So unless your getting them for free where you can experiment. I would look elsewhere given the length difference and incorrect shock style. The correct Honda shock has a fluid reservoir on the rear of the shock as shown plus a number of adjustments on the bottom beyond the typical spanner lower collar spring adjustment.

Impossible to tell with those shocks - they’re not CB900 shocks so finding someone with that exact set of aftermarket replacements is unlikely.

Longer than stock shocks will raise the rear as noted. Result is more loading on the front end which will compromise the turning handling. Basically the front tire will tend to push/slide rather than grip.

Having a set of genuine Koni shocks is far more of an upgrade than fitting CB900 shocks.
It's difficult to get head seals for them but IKON were doing batches at one time (Koni spelled backwards)
I would just re-build the Koni's, you can get better 'damper fluid' than was available 45~50 years ago, higher 'Viscosity Index' (how much an oil changes viscosity as it gets heated up)
