Hi All , first time on this forum , great to be here. Apologies in advance for any dumb questions but this is a first for me , worked on old flatheads before but nothing this modern :) I have a nice CB350 1970 K1 I think ? I will have a few questions on my journey of a full resto. I started this journey as the left pot was down to 50 on a compression check and blowing smoke , gobbling oil.

I have stripped it down to the frame which I wasn't going to do but sort of forced into it , glad I did as the frame has a crack that had previously been repaired somewhat dodgy . I have all the parts in order ? and bagged and tagged screws etc , taken heaps of photos and Vids , I tried not to bend , break or strip any screws , and think I got away okay. Purchased JIS screw drivers and impact screw driver which worked a treat.

I have attached photos of the before and the cracked weld in the frame , before I pull the motor apart I will ask the members a few questions and seek expert opinion on frame and associated parts and any thing my brain cant work out on its own and believe me the grey matter is not like it use to be .

Just a few questions after finishing the dismantle last nite.

Sandblast the frame after welding , paint or powdercoat , I am thinking a good 2 part paint black ?

The rear footpegs annoy me as they drop down and take my heel out everytime I kick start it , think they are original , did they have a spring thingy to hold them up ? should the metal parts of the rear pegs be painted black.

The main bolt on the swing arm , I did muck up one of the grease zerks , can these be replaced.

Thanks in advance , much appreciated.1000016089.jpegIMG_1675.jpegIMG_1674.jpeg

I powdercoated the frame on my 450 and it looks great, but a proper paint job will also look good if done well. Really depends on how much money you want to put into the bike.

The rubber covering (#31) on the passenger pegs IS the spring, it compresses when the pegs are tilted downward when the rubber is soft and new. New replacement peg rubbers will work as intended again. When they get old and stiff and maybe a little shrunken with age, they don't have any flexibility left and they don't exert any pressure on the square washer (#26) that presses against them.

They were plated like bolts and other hardware from the factory but have likely gotten very dark over the years from the elements.

Regarding your frame finish question personally I prefer paint, if you have the room and can spray either from a rattle can or a paint gun. Here in Canada powder coat is quite expensive in my area. Last quote for just a frame and rear swing arm was $475 plus our 13% sales tax. I then painted the frame and many other frame smaller parts for under $80.00. No contest in my book from a value perspective and when done right looks just as good with maybe a little less tolerance to chipping. Powder once chipped cannot really be touched up powder coat material wise. Paint can easily be retouched and blended to be almost seamless if needed in the future.

If you go the powder route make sure the business properly seals/plugs every threaded bolt hole and frame swing arm hole. Powder coating is thicker and if areas are not properly plugged before coating your in for some extra work in removing it from threaded holes or swing arm holes. Working on my friends CL175 we found that the parts will no longer fit or thread into until you clean out the powder coat material.

I'm a big fan of Eastwood www.eastwood.com They sell 2-part rattle can paint and other fine primers.
Fellow is in Australia so maybe Eastwood isn’t a brand offered. Must be lots of other two part options or even a single stage base with a urethane two stage clear coat.

Cheers for the replies on paint , pegs etc. really helpful.

While I attend and wait for the frame , welding , sandblasting I ripped into the motor yesterday which was the initial project.

Pulled the rocker cover to get the cam , rockers out to inspect , weird as the dome bolts on top were a mixture of 12 & 13 mm and crusty , are these available anywhere or any dome bolt will suffice.

Getting the Cam Chain sprocket bolts off was a bit of punish , will keep a look out for a thinner 3/8 extension as torqueing these later looks to be more awkward.

Below are a few photos of the Cam and rockers which look worse for wear , I know nothing about replacing , rebuilding these ? or even if these are saveable and if so what should be done to repair , regrind etc.

If any Aus members have info where in Aus can repair Cams etc , greatly appreciated. More to come with questions as I dig deeper.IMG_1703.jpegIMG_1702.jpegIMG_1701.jpegIMG_1698.jpegIMG_1697.jpegIMG_1699.jpegIMG_1700.jpegIMG_1695.jpegIMG_1696.jpeg
