1983 CB650SC Nighthawk rescue

replaced brake pedal return spring, old one was rusted and squeaking. Tried an LED brake bulb but it wil need a resistor as it triggers the dash warning. Tried front LED turn bulbs but the sockets are so rusted (water literally came out of the left one), they'll need replacing. I refit the carbs saturday

or sunday. should be warmer tomorrow. got all my switches and buttons wired (hazard, lights, dvr) so got some work done.

suggestions needed. New throttle cable is short by a few mm. (chinese ebay) If i put in in the bracket as is it holds the throttle open. top side is fully up against the adjuster so cant give any more. Do i bend the bracket or try and find new cables? This is with the carbs and not cable not routed as they should be so there were less bends.

What about the adjustment of the other cable at both ends? Or are you just using the pull cable alone?

I hope you do replace the cable;I love OEM stock Honda.
I've looked online using just the Honda part number and found parts after a bit of searching.

top side is fully up against the adjuster so cant give any more. this is just the pull cable alone, although the cables came as a set. stock honda i cant find. 4-into1 has a motion pro pull only.

The motion pro cable shows length 40.25" slack of 4 1/8", the one i got shows 47.5" length and 4.5" slack so i cant see how the motion pro one could work.

Here's some options. 4into1 only carries the "pull"-throttle cable (Motion Pro #02-0100), and I searched eBay for it too.
For some reason, at Motion Pro's site, they only offer the "pull" cable, no "push" cable, guessing that push cables rarely if ever break.

Searched eBay with the "push"-throttle cable part #17920-ME5-000 :

I hadn't ordered from Motion Pro in a couple decades and back then they were a great choice;possibly use their 'pull' cable item# and find an NOS Motion Pro pull cable ?

Knowing yours is a 1983 model, looking at 4into1, they list a "repro" pull-cable for the 1982 CB650SC Nighthawk that is 47 and 7/8" long and a Motion Pro pull-cable for the 1982 CB650SC Nighthawk that is 48.25" long

bilbikek411 : Looks as if we can buy directly from www.motionpro.com

I'm leaning toward thinking you've got an early 1983 that came new with 1982 cables or a 1982 set-up ?
I'm thinking this since the cables offered at 4into1 for the '82 more-closely match yours and also because here's a used OEM (supposedly) set off an '83 where the seller states a length of 40.5" for the pull-cable and 39" for the push-cable

i guess i should have kept the old ones but they were worn and sticking. I bought the 4-into-1 pull cable and a NOS push cable off ebay. 2 more weeks with no carb work. and i dont want to bleed the clutch line without the engine working so thats on hold too. Guess i'll touch up the gas tank

is there any illustrations or pics of the inside of the headlight casing? I got the 4 way hazards working but cannot get the headlight back in. its not the wires i added either, it has to be how the big harnesses are routed. PITA!

Does the inside of your headlight case have molded-on spots toward the back where the large multi-wire plugs get pushed into ?

There might be a few pics in the FSM. Once they went to block plugs it got harder to arrange them for sure.

no, just openings and 2 clamps on the sides (#12

headlight in. but i dropped the light and the plastic LED housing broke so im back to halogen.
Carbs in! New cables, runs great. I've had them out so long i cant figure out what this 10mm bolt has on it (left side, green arrow).

next up. reverse push-bleed the clutch line.

Currently painting some of the tank and of course taking shortcuts so its taking longer. Finish up wiring tomorrow and road test.

bike is ready to roll, just need to finish clear coating the tank with the heavy 2k stuff, last warm day tomorrow for a bit. I may need an extra support bracing for the rear rack if it bounces too much. leaving the turn signals non-led for now. Also need to read the date on the tires and order new ones.

I want to hear what it was like for you when you spray that 2K clear;I hope it goes well.
I will do the same(first time w/ 2K)but need to wait until the humidity dries-up in early Spring.

Ive used it before for my cm400 sidepods. nasty stuff, 2 masks needed and humidity under 50%

anything bad on dunlop D404's? currently has kenda challengers on it.
Honda chose Yokohama for the OE tires on my '85 XR350R.
Shinko acquired Yokohama more recently.
I narrowed my tire choice for my '82 CM450Custom down to either Shinko 712 or US-made D404's.
Chose the Shinkos because price was a little lower and A.D.-Tom liked his.
Oddly, I've now got a Pirelli on the front of my XRR with a Continental on its rear and
a previous owner's OLD Kenda Challengers on my other Custom

test ride went ok, but rear brake pedal is low, need to lube the pivot or get a stronger return spring.

Tank looks great, coming along nicely. Bet you didn't think it was going to take so much TLC, but you stuck with it and it will pay off with a nice ride.

Hard to tell from your "Before" pic with Q-tips plugging the screw holes, but I think I see the dulled topside ?
But it sure looks candy-glossy in the "After" pics - NICE !
..noticed your kitchen oven - IF you used it to speed up the 2k gloss-coat curing, I hope you only pre-heated the oven to a somewhat low-temp and shut it off before placing your tank into it.
Seeing that lovely original HondaWing decal and the oven in the same photo made me think "OH SHIITE - WHAT'S HE THINKING !?"

Here's a tank I wish I could mount on my Custom:

so the brake pedal return spring is not available, i have a decent replacement but its still not returning up. also my ground wire is rubbing against the tailight switch spring so i need to reroute things down there better.
vids of test ride, rear rack is wobbly, ill secure that.

clutch works great, almost too great, i just have to get used to it coming from my hondamatic

windscreen installed, cant test it until the weather warms up. next up, remove tires, have CG mount them, im going to repaint the front fender while its accessible. waiting on new brake springs for rear brake shoes and return spring for pedal, and mounting brackets for rear rack. might lower rear rack if I can but I kind f like how it makes the brake light easier to see.

lowered windscreen and changed front turns to LED, tested. my hazard button is a little iffy but works if i mess with it. waiting on new brackets to lower the rear rack and a return brake spring. have new tires but need to get those installed. its pretty cold here.

I like that bike (y)
How does your front-end feel on it? Looks real solid.

ive only riden it once so far and coming from a hondamatic, i need to get used to feathering the clutch more so judging how the front end feels is in the works. it does have an anti-dive feature o the front forks since its a shaft drive.

I use a luggage rack for all kinds of items:small and large.
I make sure it's 4-point frame mounted, rather than mounted to the rear fender.
I've modified a couple luggage racks to fit different bikes I have;I cut some pieces and brought the assembly w/ my bike to a welder. I don't mind if it looks a little burned in the chrome in spots,as long as it's strong. ;)

tires still have some life in them so im just going to change the rear brakes for now. nice day to take some shots of the two. the 400a is getting harder to start each time, once it warms up its fine.
