My lower CL350 muffler has all the mounting studs broken off - any idea how to fix this without welding?

As you see, the mounting points on my muffler are gone. The top one is really rough, but because of how it is I can actually get a nut behind the bracket and make that one work. However the bottom two I'm not sure what to do with. I tried drilling out what was left of the stud, thinking I could slip a nut behind the bracket, but realized it was tacked on with a weld behind the bracket and drilling wouldn't help without making the hole very large.

I'm open to suggestions, hoping not to have to buy a new muffler, but happy at least it's just the smaller (cheaper) part of the exhaust.

Thanks!

Mine had a similar issue and I found a good welder who was able to fix them. (I actually started doing it myself, but asked the welder to clean it up.) Yours are a bit worse than mine, but I still think a good welder can fix it if you can find appropriate bolts/studs to substitute.

Thing is, I actually got a welder a few years ago but my garage isn't wired for 220 and I've never been a very good welder. It can work on 120, but I'm not sure it will have enough power to weld this. I should really just dig in and practice a bit.

I know of a few welding shops around me though, I suppose I could see what they charge, just trying to spend less money.

It’ll pretty easily handle that kind of weld. Even a little wire feed can tack a bolt on pretty easily. It’s on the inside, doesn’t have to be pretty!

A grinder and paint makes me the welder ain’t.

Well, I'll practice on some scrap first, but you guys have convinced me to give it a shot!

I'll have to source some studs, or bolts I can cut to size.

Nice! The ability to weld - even if ugly - makes a lot of restoration and build work much more possible.

The good news is those are super common thread/pitch studs that can easily be just made with a cut off bolt or even just tack welding a bolt on in place of a stud.

Looks like the one farthest from the end goes all the way thru? If so get some bar stock and put that thru and see if you can extend all the way to the other one. Make some holes and use that as the support
